A Song of Ice and Fire casting (it’s a fantasy series, so this is my fantasy cast): Part I

For those of you that don't know the series A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin, you won't understand this, and I pity you greatly. You should go read the series, and then come back and read this blog. HBO recently bought the rights to the series, and since then everyone's been talking about which big name actor they want to play the major roles. I decided to make my own, rather extensive list. So I've split it into the major Houses/groups and will be posting them over the next several posts. Obviously, I have to start with one of the biggest, most powerful houses in the great land of Westeros, the dreaded Lannisters. Hope you enjoy!

Lannisters and Associates:

Tywin Lannister: Rutger Hauer
Kevan Lannister: Paul Giamatti
Jaime Lannister: Aaron Eckhart
Cersei Lannister: Rachel McAdams
Tyrion Lannister: Tommy Flanagan (with a lot of special effects, of course)
Joffrey: Max Pirkis (Octavian from Rome) Myrcella: Jenna Boyd
Tommen: Chris O’Neil
Bronn: Cillian Murphy
Lancel Lannister: Ben Foster
Shae: Jamie-Lynn Sigler (seen in Sopranos)
Shagga: Vince Vaughn
Conn: Owen Wilson
Timett son of Timett: Ben Stiller
Osney Kettleblack: Liev Schreiber
Osfred Kettleblack: Charlie Sheen
Sandor Clegane: Daniel Craig
Gregor Clegane: Vinnie Jones
Illyn Payne: Daniel Day Lewis
Vargo Hoat: John Malkovich

Nice job with the Lannister children. Definitely can see them in those pics. Tyrion is always a tough pic but I think that guy could do it. Cersei also is well chosen. I like the Stiller/Wilson/Vaughn group as an idea but I think if they were ACTUALLY cast it would take away from the movie.

Really fun reading it. I however, don't think Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson should be allowed in the movie -- it'd totally kill it.

Daniel Day is awesome as Ilyn, but I fear wasted. I think he'd be an awesome Ned Stark (with more airtime).

Jaime Lannister - Brad Pitt

Nice list. Man I can't wait for this show. I am on the third book right now and I LOVE this series.

great choice for joffrey. what about nicole kidman for cersei? (too old perhaps). I agree with the idea of day lewis for ned stark. well done with the clegane brothers, too. how about viggo mortensen for brynden tully? nice blog.

That kid looks perfect for Joff, just how I imagined him really. I love the Gregor Clegane = Vinnie Jones idea. John Malkovich as Vargo is brilliant! He'd pull it off perfectly!!

I don't think Rachel McAdams and Aaron Eckhart look too much alike to play twins. But, I do like the choices. Zac Effron looks a little more like Rachel, however I believe that Aaron would be a fantastic choice for Jamie. Hmmm...Much to ponder...I love the cast list, though...Good job.

Nick Nolte - Lord Commander Mormont?
Robert Pattinson - Robb Stark
Milo Ventimiglia - Jon Snow

oh and im thinking brad pitt should do tywin lannister...with shaved head and all im a believer right there.

good list but, these are the changes id make, cersei = ali larter, Jamie = Michael C. Hall, Tywin = Liam Neeson (maybye, he might be to likeable). Also it great that u put in Ben foster but hes ways too good an actor to just play lancel

I love your ideas on the Lannisters. Daniel Day as Ned Stark would be incredible. I look forward to your next suggestions

Not bad! I definitely think your choice for Vargo Hoat was right on. And Daniel Craig was unexepcted, but I really like it! Whenever I'm reading about Tyrion, though, I always imagine either Verne Troyer or Martin Klebba. I can't wait to see who actually gets casted! :)

i think Cersei looks like barbie...

Aaron certainly fits as Jaime but i think he's too old

I think the classic dwarf actors out there at the moment don't really fit the Tyrion character. Verne is too small and Warwick Davis has been mentioned but I'm just not sure he can play him right.

As a lot of these characters are fairly muscle bound warriors I pretty much automatically started thinking of wrestlers to play different characters. With a decent wig, Joanie Laurer (Chyna) would make a great Briene with enough acting classes and Paul Wight (Big Show) could play a great Gregor Clegane.

Brilliant casting on Vargo, but I think the part is too small for him. Maybe John could play a good Sandor Clegane? He is a very versitile actor.

Eckhart does fit Jaime's look and character but I agree is too old.

I always imagine Cersei looking like Helena Bergstrom who plays Astrid in Still Crazy (old film with Jimmy Nail in it) Actually Jimmy Nail is about miserable enough to play someone surely :P
Though she is too old now too.

Going back to wrestlers, how about Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) as Khal Drogo?

I really have to stop thinking about these and get back to work...

I love your picks, well most of them... someone said the pick for jamie is too old. not true in the book jamie is no longer a young knight but not old either, your pick i think is perfect. my main problem is with the mountain, as far as what i've seen the only actor that would come even close to a suitable pick for The Mountain that Rides, is the actor that played Bowagruis from from the Movie Troy (the one achilies killed in the very beginning... sorry i don't know his name but he is the only thing i've seen close to matching how the mountain (sir Gregor) is described

Tyrion = Peter Dinklage. That's all there is to it, the man is a brilliant, and the right build. No cgi necessary.

ben stiller as timmett son of timmett???? are you mentally handicapped? have you ever read A song of ice and fire? oh? once? ohhhh, that makes this all clear, why your cast list sucks.

if stiller, vaughn or wilson were in a movie based on this series i would snap... no need to ruin an excellent story with a group of crappy actors like these... No get your head outta your ass man haha

Liam Neeson - Ned Stark. The voice is perfect.
Not to sure about Cillian Murphy playing Bronn,I think he'd make a better Theon Greyjoy.
Ray Winstone - Greatjon. May not have the build but definitely made for the part.
The Clansmen shouldnt be played by the Vaughn/Stiller/Wilson trio nor should they go near ASoIaF. Maybe some suitably hairy nuts could be found.
Big Show for the Mountain? Are you mad? The Mountain is big but not fat, Vinnie Jones would work if he could act.

i think the choices for all the lannisters are excellent, and craig for sandor is nice, but the 3 comedians( vaughn, wilson and stiller as some of the strongest characters in the series would destroy those segments.

i would just like to say that i think rutger hauer is perfect as tywin lannister.

Aaron Eckhart is one of my favorite actors but I don't quite like him as Jaime...maybe because Jaime actually has very little screen time in the 1.3 books I have read so far and is more of a reputation than a character...hate Rachel McAdams as Cersei...whoever plays Tyrion has to be a top-notch actor...Cillian Murphy seems too cultured to play Bronn...I would enjoy seeing Jamie-Lynn Sigler naked a lot but feel she is too urban for Shae...Liev Schreiber is the kind of actor that must be in this - I have not yet gotten to these Kettleblacks...As someone else said Daniel Craig was a surprising choice for the Hound but a good one.

Bang on with the addition of Peter Dinklage and Nathan Jones as "The Mountain". How about Oliver Reed for Lord Commander Mormont. Who would play Varys? I think that could be a great part well played. I like Liam For Stark also.

Man, I love all the comments I'm getting on this! Obviously I have my favorite picks and some people I just chose because there were parts that needed filling. The picks I am most passionate about are Rutger Hauer, Aaron Eckhart, Paul Giamatti, Max Pirkis, Daniel Craig, Daniel Day Lewis, and John Malkovich. The comedians as the wild mountain men is certainly the weakest picks I have, and would undoubtedly be great if unknowns were cast for them.

I also have been hearing a lot about Peter Dinklage and how he would be a great Tyrion. I personally haven't seen anything that he's in, but am definitely willing to give him the spot after hearing so many rave reviews. When I first put this list together I only had a few other options and I really disliked the idea of Verne Troyer taking the part.

And if Dinklage took that part, that would open Tommy Flanagan up for another role... which I'd probably say would be Bronn.

Oh, and for those of you who are still reading these... if you're interested in all the characters, you'll have to scroll through my blog posts from January 08 through April 08. All the Houses are there!

I like some of your picks and disagree with others. Casting the comedic actors as the leaders of the "savages" would create too much of an anchorman vibe and ruin it with inappropriate comic relief. I think you were probably joking though. I see Shagga more as Michael Clarke Duncan than as Vince Vaughn.

As for the others...
Bronn: I pictured Tommy Flanagan right away while reading the book.
Viserys: I think a more appropriate choice for Cillian Murphy.
Cersei: Nicole Kidman or someone with similar sharp aryan beauty. I think Rachel McAdams is too cutesy for Cersei.
Jaime: Matthew Goode. Not too old, not too young, with a face that's perfect for the character.
Robert Baratheon: Jeffery Dean Morgan would make a great young Robert, but he'd have to be really fat for old Robert.
Littlefinger: Elijah Wood (think Sin City malice, with a creepy pointy beard)
Rhaegar: Billy Crudup?

I agree with your choices for the kids and the Clegane bros.
